World environment day comes to Birmingham

Tomorrow will see the beginning of celebrations in Birmingham for World Environment Day.

The event will take place throughout the entire weekend across different areas of Birmingham.

The celebrations are set to liven up the streets and put a smile on everyone’s face while raising awareness about important aspects of our environment.

The event will be made up of different festivals and themes concerning the environment including a Climate Change festival, held in Sutton Coldfield from Friday to Saturday and a Water for life Festival, held in a Cannon Hill Park on Sunday.

The entertainment ranges from face painting and donkey sanctuaries to plant potting and designing your own recycled clothes!

The weekend will be an aim to get people interested in the environment and how we can make it better while having fun at the same time. The climate change festival will be held in a range of areas in Sutton Coldfield including the Sutton Library Red Rose Centre and The Mall in the Gracechurch centre as well as a parade through the street.

Free canvas bags, energy saving light bulbs and vegetable planting kits will be up for grabs so get yourself down to the streets of Birmingham to stock up on household essentials!

Recycling will also be an important aspect of the weekend as audiences will be able to take a look at a range of recycled goods such as art and go-carts.  Tips on how to design your own recycled clothes will also be available in libraries in Mere Green, Wylde Green, Boldmere and Walmley.

Every aspect of the event will be a tribute to a greener lifestyle.

The Climate Change festival will take place between 10am – 4pm and the Water for Life festival will take place between 11am – 5pm.

Cabinet member for Leisure, Sport and Culture Coun Martin Mullaney told the Birmingham Mail: “Green issues are taking centre stage and this is a really good opportunity to demonstrate how local people can make a positive impact on the environment if they become more ‘water aware’.”
