Midlanders can Tweet for charity

The world’s first Twitterthon will be taking place tomorrow (Tuesday 16th June) at 11AM, where Computer Aid (or @Computer_Aid) will be campaigning for an ambitious 1,000 donations of old computers in four hours to help schools and hospitals in the developing world.

Birmingham Recycled has previously spoken about how people in the Midlands can donate old computers to be reused but tomorrow the charity will be making the most of new technology to raise awareness of their increasing need for computers.

Midland Tweeters can watch their progress as the day passes.

Computer Aid professionally refurbishes PCs and laptops in its London workshop and ships them for re-use in schools, hospitals and community organisations in developing countries.

Tony Roberts, CEO and Founder of Computer Aid, said:

“Reusing old PCs is much better for the environment than recycling them down to their component parts and it also provides an invaluable opportunity for disadvantaged schoolchildren who would otherwise have no access to ICT in education.

We can put a PC on a school desk in Africa within six weeks of receiving the donation and we estimate that one donated PC will deliver at least a further three years’ use.”

Any people or businesses that wish to donate old computers gathering dust in backrooms or store cupboards in Birmingham would only have to pay for delivery costs.
