Birmingham City Council encourage recycling in Sutton Coldfield despite household site redevelopment

Birmingham City Council recently announced a redevelopment at Sutton Coldfield’s recycling centre. The centre officially closed last week on Monday 2nd March and predicted to be reopened in June/July time.

Although the redevelopment may seem like an inconvenience to locals living it Sutton Coldfield, the council have told us, once the centre is finished and reopened it will include ‘better access to the recycling and compositing facilities’ and ‘a redesign on the access to prevent traffic build up during busy periods.’

The council have apologized for any inconvenience caused to regular users as there has been worry as to whether the redevelopment will cause people to not bother recycling until the centre is reopened in 3 – 4 months.

To avoid this problem, the council have a number of options which they are encouraging the public to use including making use of; Household recycling centres at Tameside Drive in Castle Bromwich or Holford Drive in Perry Barr.

The council are also recommending that the public look into using other recycling sites when possible as there are over 400 around the city which are promoted on the Birmingham City Council website.

Perry Barr also has recycling centres located at One stop shopping centre, in the Tennis court Car Park on Church Road or in Walsall on Tower Hill so the public don’t have to stick to the recommended household sites if they don’t wish to.

The council are also trying their best to encourage public use of the door step recycling service which takes place every fortnight and a large amount of households in Birmingham now have access to.

Those who do not yet have access to the door step recycling service are urged to use one of the five household recycling centres in the city, but the good news is that after seven years of waiting it is said that all housing in the city should be given access to the door step recycling service by the end of 2009.

The service began in 2002 and was operated around ’20,000 households every week, covering Moseley, Small Heath, Bordesley Green, South Yardley, Nechells and Sparkbrook.’

The service has since increased around the city and hopefully the increasing will be over by the end of the year as promised by the council.
