Biffa to develop new recycling plant in the West Midlands

Waste management service Biffa has announced it will be developing a new recycling plant in the West Midlands that will be active by 2010.

The company said yesterday that the plant will be constructed at the new Midpoint Distribution Centre off Water Orton Lane, Minworth and will be fully operational by September 2010.

In January, Biffa started working on sorting the infrastructure of the recycling plant which will initially process 200,000 tonnes of waste materials each year and achieve recycling rates of over 96%.

Biffa’s engineering director, Dr John Casey said that the recycling plant project will also help the West Midlands economy, by creating up to 40 jobs.

He added:

“It is also important for us all to recognise that the jobs being created here are new green jobs helping both the environment and regional businesses by giving them the opportunity to recycle more and in doing so, reduce the cost of sending their waste to landfill.”

Biffa has further plans to develop more new generation recycling and treatment facilities in the Midlands and across the UK, as it moves more of its customers’ waste to recycling.
