People & Planet run its Green League campaign in 137 UK universities
The green league campaign which aims at transforming the environmental impact of the UK’s universities runs this year , its fourth campaign .
‘By not recycling, universities are wasting money on landfill taxes as well as contributing to pollution and climate change’ said People and Planet’s press officer , Louise Hazan.
The competition involves 137 universities in the UK which are ranked according to the proportion of total waste mass they recycle. And awards are attributed according to:
• University supports of annual Go Green Week or Environment Week
• Student involvement (e.g. course work or volunteering) in sustainability projects.
• Availability of funds for student or staff-led sustainability projects
• Trade Union climate action groups or time off to participate in Union-linked sustainability initiatives.
According to a People & Planet source the University of Birmingham and Birmingham City University have received lower second class award last year
. Louise Hazan said ‘Both universities should strengthen their environment policies and ethical investment and encourage students to volunteering in sustainability projects.’
But declined to comment on this year’s results saying that the Times Higher Education had exclusivity right on the campaigns result’s data.
