Eco Salon’s in Birmingham

Birmingham has continued to receive positive feedback about the city’s contribution to helping the environment, but what are local salons doing to raise Birmingham’s profile as a Green City?

With eco friendly hair products such as TIGI’s ‘Love People and the Planet’ and Easydry’s ‘Disposable Towels’ we look into Birmingham’s salons to see who’s doing what.

TIGI has recently introduced their ‘Love People and the Planet’ range, which offers customers hair products with natural and organic ingredients combined with a negligible amount of synthetics. Since this product has been launched, Toni and Guy have started to distribute it across their stores in the region; however Birmingham’s branch is yet to receive this eco product.

Easydry is a new brand that offers customers disposable towels that are environmentally friendly. The Easydry towels are made from renewable sources that are 100% biodegradable and completely recyclable. Although Birmingham salons are yet to introduce this product, it appears to be the way forward for most high street salons.

Hush Hair, one of Birmingham’s leading salons appears to be striving ahead of the rest to become the city’s most eco salon. The salon has continued to implement features to help the planet, from using energy saving light bulbs, which saves 80% of their energy usage to introducing water reducing jet nozzles, which will save them 1/3 of water and energy consumption a year.

Speaking with Salon Owner and Manager, James Holmes, he discusses why these eco changes are so important to helping reduce carbon emissions and make Birmingham greener.

‘At Hush Hair we try to recycle as much as possible, this includes plastic, cardboard and paper. Our latest venture is to encourage customers to refill their shampoo and conditioner at the salon, by doing this we can offer customers 25% off the retail price and it gives the plastic bottles a second life.’

James Holmes added:

‘It’s so important to contribute towards helping the environment, since we have implemented our eco friendly features we have reduced our energy usage and saved money on electricity too. I do believe other salons in Birmingham could be doing more and making it their priority.’

Other Birmingham salons including: Reflections, KZT Hairdressing and Umberto Giannini have all spoken out the lack of support they are receiving as salons by the local Birmingham Council.

Phillip Dawes, Assistant Manager at Reflections said:

‘We would love to do more to help the environment as a salon, but as it stands we just don’t have the facilities to do so. As we are situated amongst other local businesses and with only one recycling bin between us, it is very hard to recycle much as it’s often full.’

Phillip continued:

‘I often find myself having to take plastic and paper home to recycle as there aren’t the facilities at work, however travelling by bus can often make this very difficult.’

Here’s a look at what other Salons in Birmingham are doing:
