Council Plan A New Strategy To Help Businesses Recycle

Birmingham City Council admit that although Government recycling targets are assessed on residential statistics, they are doing there upmost to address the issue for business recycling.

The council currently offer services to 7,000 businesses which is roughly 20% of businesses in Birmingham, who currently pay £9 for waste collection.

Although the council can not offer the same services as they do for residential areas, due to Government figures being based on targets that come from household waste collections and not trade.

However business recycling is still an area of interest to the council, Kevin Mitchell Head of Fleet and Waste Management stated:

‘By helping businesses to recycle it can help reduce landfill waste, and cut cost for the council as we are the one’s responsible for paying tax on landfill waste, by cutting this we can help put funding into other area’s of the council, and help Birmingham’s environment.’

The Approach

The council have sent out a questionnaire where by they asked the councils existing trade customers:

  • What they think of the services offered so far?
  • Would they be willing to segregate their waste for recycling?
  • Is this a service they would be willing to pay for?
The results for this survey are still being analysed, however the initial response has said to be in favour and very positive about businesses paying for recycling services.
The New Strategy
‘It all relies on costings to meet our overheads, as this will be a new area we are venturing into new it will need new collections in places, new collection teams, and this also relates back to what a company is willing to pay.” Kevin Mitchell Head of Fleet and Waste Management.’
The format looks to be ran on the basis of a reduced cost to the existing waste collection services, businesses pay £9 for waste collection presently, but the council hopes to offer this alternative at a reduced cost of £5/6.
