Recycle in and around the Universities Of Birmingham.

Universities are starting to be environmentally friendly; Aston University is having a brand new redevelopment project committing to green buildings. New green roofs are build on each blocks covered by plants and grass. This will reduce the heating and cooling loads on buildings in order for lowering energy.

Trishna Patel a former student aged 21 says, ” Aston University has been environmentally friendly throughout, the recycling bins outside the library are used immensely to separate paper and bottles. This will all then be collated to reduce waste and pollution. Students are always using them!”

Birmingham university recycling rates have always been up, Peter Larkin a worker in the ICT department says “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of staff who are supporting the paper and cardboard recycling schemes we have been managing over the last couple of years” there recycle rates have increased immensely with help of the students giving help back with paper that they do not use.

Birmingham City University has always been friendly area to study in; Perry bar the main campus has an environmentally welcoming atmosphere and is committed to preventing pollution through direct actions.

Smoking is not permitted directly outside buildings, bins are permitted around the campus to ensure students do not litter. Student accommodation is walking distance from the university, so students will walk rather then using a car to avoid pollution.

You can always make a difference to improve the environment to make it a happier place to work in students can always help by these top tips

  • Think before the amount you print (is it really necessary to make print outs of papers you don’t need?)

  1. I never knew universities did so much to help the environment! Sounds like our Uni needs to step up a bit compared to Birmingham and Aston though!

  2. Interesting article. I agree with Emma but think BCU still do their part with my memories ‘Eco Rangers’ consistent campaigning when I started uni here.

  4. They are definitely doing a lot more – have you all noticed the new recycling bins in the canteen, corridors and library??

Some uni’s are able to build green roofs, but until the developments at Millenium Point take off, I dont think BCU has any building work in the pipeline… unless the Sports Centre counts?

  5. The Aston angle sounds like it might make a story – we need to know more about that and less happy-happy PR fluff about BCU (which doesn’t rank highly on a recent league table of uni eco-ness).
Don’t always plump for the ‘quote from the street’ – it adds nothing to the piece.
