Smart Meters to reduce energy use

Homeowners will soon be able to get hold of smart meters which will keep track and help them cut down on their energy use. The smart meters will be available in UK homes sooner than expected according to a recent report.

Smart meters monitor energy use and will allow households to take control of their energy bills and decide when to use energy. It will also indicate to homeowners, current energy prices. The government has set a target for all households to have smart meters installed by 2020.

However this has been challenged by the Institute for Public Policy Research, who have said that this process should be speeded up. Matthew Lockwood, senior fellow in the climate team at IPPR said “Nine in ten of the homes we will live in by 2020 have already been built, so we will need creative approaches to keep carbon reduction front of mind during a recession”.

  1. There seems to be a lot of coverage on energy reading gadgets – such as Oli’s post – but is that really going to reduce the amount we use?

  2. My dad is going to be buying one of these soon, and some have the ability for you text it on the way home to be switched on in time for the house to be warm. It basically is a better way to control how you heat your house for example. Apparently though, they are indeed expensive at the moment, and the investment will take something like 5 years to recoup.
