Birmingham campaign encouraging local transport in 2010

Birmingham cutting CO2‘ plans for 2010 aim to encourage people to ditch the cars and using more local and economical transport.

The campaign will encourage people to use more local and economical transport, and some local railway stations may be re-opening, the main priority is making sure that the transport available is low in C02 emissions and is easily accessible for local people.

The group is also encouraging Birmingham City Council to implement a strategic scheme to lower carbon emissions by 60% from 1990 to 2026.

The campaign was launched in 2007 and is run by the Birmingham Environmental Partnership, which is brought together by the government and other organisations.

On World Environment Day it was announced that Birmingham has reduced 103,039 tones of C02 since March 2008, exceeding the target of 100,000 tones. City hospitals and primary care trusts have collectively saved 8,000 tones of emissions, and other changes have come from simple amendments made at home and in daily routines.

Tariq Khan, from Birmingham City Council said, ‘This achievement is great and more achievements are bound to happen, the reduction of carbon emissions will reduce again this year, leaving Birmingham cleaner and fresher as the second largest city in the UK.’
