Xerox to release new environmentally friendly printer

Earlier this month, Xerox announced plans of a new printer which will reduce both waste and energy, the Xerox ColorQubeTM 9200

Xerox, who have taken part in various environmental campaigns in the past, claim that the new system will reduce printing waste by a whopping 90%. This is because the new system will use solid ink instead of ink cartridges, as have always been used in the past.

As well as the reduced waste of cartridges, according to the press release, the new printer will uses nine per cent less lifecycle energy and produces 10 per cent fewer greenhouse gases than comparable printers.

The product will be aimed at business offices which print a large amount of work daily, therefore dramatically cutting the wasted energy and gases usually produced by these large companies.

According to Douraid Zaghouani, senior vice president, Office, Xerox Europe “The environmental advantages of the Xerox ColorQubeTM 9200 Series multifunction system are compelling.”

This announcement can only be good news for the environment; if such a large international company like Xerox is starting to take more care about the environment, we can only hope the small companies will follow.

But, is it enough? It is a known fact that paper itself is bad for the environment, as it is made from trees. In the future, could we go one step further and get rid of paper and printing altogether?

The new Xerox ColorQubeTM 9200 is currently only available in the USA and Canada, but it is expected to be available in Europe from September 2009. When contacted regarding the new system and the environment, no one was available to comment.
