Public like litter fine cutback
Birmingham Recycled have discovered that some members of the public are happy with Sandwell Council’s proposal to cut litter fines because of the recession.
The Express and Star stated that Sandwell would be the first authority in the West Midlands to implement the measure, which sees fixed penalty notices for offences including dropping litter and cigarette butts will be reduced from £75 to £50 if people pay within ten days.
Birmingham resident Tina Lindsey, 36, a Customer Services Representative said: “It’s a good idea because the Council are recognising the recession and that it’s hard times for a lot of the public, so they are cutting them some slack.”
Sales Assistant Ian Cooper, 16, agreed: “The fact that it’s only cut if you pay within the first ten days makes it fair. If people care enough and make the effort to pay then their fine will be reduced, whereas those who simply can’t be bothered will still have to pay the full price and go to court.”
Lisa Jones, 32, a telesales worker from Tamworth said: “I hope that they introduce it around here too, I hate having to worry all the time that I might be caught because of a small slip up. Seventy five pounds is a lot of money.”
Student Jennie Wilks, 19, however, disagreed: “It is a ridiculous idea. If people are so concerned about not being about to afford the fine then they should just not drop litter, it’s a pretty simple scenario.”
