Future unsure for Centre of the Earth

The Wildlife Trust’s Centre of the Earth in Winson Green might be used as headquarters for the organisation instead of being an education facility as employees are planning on being transferred.

The current Head of Centre Andrew Simons is being made redundant.

The Wildlife Trust say however that there will still be the same educational events taking place, but Simons guesses that there will be a reduced amount as there will only be one educational officer working on site and he or she will not be there full time.

Simons says:

“Obviously nothing is set in stone yet.

So far I have spoken to local councillors, police and other people in environmental education who all agree that it would be a shame to lose this facility.”

Simons is in the midst of making an appeal against the decision to terminate his job.

The Centre of the Earth opened in 1993 and educates children from primary school to those in higher education on environmental issues such as pollution to the conservation of wildlife.

If you are concerned about the implications this might have on the local community and wish to show your support, you can contact Andrew Simons on coe@bbcwildlife.org.uk.
