I think you shuld look at other aspects of the development than just the "green roofs."

- The masterplan has 10 "Guiding Principles" and sustainability is only mentioned in passing in one of them (and it's rolled in with "commercial sustainability").

- How much investment will the city centre need, and how does this figure compare with the investment needed to make the 110 000 households in the city far more greener?

- HOw will energy be generated for each of the new buildings in the city centre? Will it be renewable and on-site?

- What will happen to the waste after old buildings get demolished? (i.e. will the bricks and steel be reused elsewhere in Coventry)

- When the purpose of the project is to double the amount of retail in the city centre, how is this environmental? Twice as many shops means twice as many resources to go into clothing to be put on racks. Part of our current crisis is that we've built up personal credit card debt, putting shopping at the centre of what we do in our leisure time.

One of the "three r's" is reduce. Maybe we don't need more retail in Coventry, we need more reuse, and a different kind of retail ... and less of it.

Good article, Emma! I'm sure Coventry will look great with the new revamp, and kudos to the Council for recognising the need for more eco-friendliness.

Impressive, roof top gardens are fairly common in my home town.. but thought they were more expensive to install than conventional roofs, so some authorities steered clear.
Are they revamping existing buildings or creating new ones?
