Birmingham Students are friends of the Lake District
The Birmingham University Conservation Volunteers’ (BUCV) academic year started with a bang, with a residential trip taking fifteen students to the Lake District.
Old and new members of the society undertook the two-night trip to join Friends of the Lake District in improving the area.
They did conservation work such as building fences to keep control of where cattle can roam and clearing the area to be made into woodland.
Friends of the Lake District aim to enhance the landscapes for future generations, so that when they visit with their children they can see that they helped to make this beautiful area’s bloom possible.
The trip was organised by the two co-chairs Julia Haslett and Andrew Limm after an earlier successful expedition in 2007.
Andrew said: “The residential was a hit, it really attracted people to join the society – when the last academic year ended we had nine members, now we have thirty-five!
“In the past we’ve found it hard to find new members, but I think that this year especially more people are aware of environmental issues, and with our activities we are doing something both fun and worthwhile!”
