‘Make A Difference’ At Lickey Hills Country Park
Lickey Hills Country Park are encouraging people to volunteer at their ‘Make A Difference Day’ on 7th March to help protect the park’s heathland.
The volunteer day is part of their clearance work on the parks heathland sites to help protect the natural habitat of wild growing plants, surrounding woodland and wildlife that’s attracted to the park.
Lickey Hills ‘Make A Difference’ volunteer days are run every year during the autumn months into spring.
One of the site rangers at the park said:
‘We try to run at least two a year and we run them in between these seasons because nothing really needs doing during the summer months.
The park pretty much looks after itself in the summertime and only needs a helping hand in terms of conservation during the winter period.’
Volunteer days at Lickey Hills concentrate on conservation of the heathland across the park’s three main hilltops, Rednal Hill, Bilberry Hill and Cofton Hill.
The protection of the heathland and the habitat that can be found at the park is part of an ongoing conservation project that has been funded by an Environmental Stewardship Scheme.
This is a scheme that helps rural areas with maintenance, restoration and creation of heathland areas.
Work done at Lickey Hills volunteer days aim to help the re-growth of the heathland and some of the activities include working to protect the plants, mainly heather, that can be found on the heath.
Other work includes getting rid of young trees so their roots don’t stop plant growth and ruin the heath.
The site ranger added:
‘Our volunteer days are popular and we ask that anyone who wants to help out calls us and books beforehand.
We ask people to book because we can only take a maximum of 15 volunteers due to the amount of tools we have available.’
