What is known, as the I-Fairy, is four feet high, with flashing eyes, conducted a wedding ceremony in front of 50 guests, which was controlled by a man who sat behind a black curtain nearby.

The robot was made at a company where Satoko Shibata the bride, works, and Tomohiro Shibata, the groom, is a university professor teaching robotics.

It was the first of something ever been seen and has made history.

The challenge is an initiative, which aims to drive private – sector investment in energy efficiency and renewable energy products.

Now the mayors of over 500 European cities will challenge their city to reduce C02 emissions
by 20% by 2010.

The pledge signed by these cities will pledge to save energy and raise awareness, and it will be overseen by the Prime Minister of Spain and the EU President. The cities involved will have to measure how much C02 they
emit, then they will have to make a plan to cut these emissions.

The initiative has been backed by Sir Richard Branson, who has signed up cities including, London, Washington DC, Atlanta and New York.

Birmingham’s introduction to the world’s most ecological and non toxic ice rink has opened in the Star City Complex last month.

Xtra Ice is an energy saving ice rink, which is used all around the world, in the US for Hockey leagues, and entertainment. The largest one is situated in Japan.

The ice rink has a zero energy consumption, unlike a normal ice rink which uses about 2000 kw/day, which is equivalent to the energy consumption of 300 household’s in the UK.

Not only is the machine eco friendly, it is also quick and easy to assemble and disassemble. There is no need for many staff or machinery.

The ice rink is for both indoor and outdoor use, it suitable for all types of weather conditions and easy to maintain, there is any size available, and normal skates are suitable for this surface.

Furthermore, it is a safe way for people to have as there are limited risks of injuries because it has a high impact-absorbing material, therefore being great for beginners.

Manager of Xtra Ice, Star City said:

“It’s a great way to have fun, being cheap and economical come and join us at Star City for the skating experience, we’re open seven day’s a week.”

The campaign will encourage people to use more local and economical transport, and some local railway stations may be re-opening, the main priority is making sure that the transport available is low in C02 emissions and is easily accessible for local people.

The group is also encouraging Birmingham City Council to implement a strategic scheme to lower carbon emissions by 60% from 1990 to 2026.

The campaign was launched in 2007 and is run by the Birmingham Environmental Partnership, which is brought together by the government and other organisations.

On World Environment Day it was announced that Birmingham has reduced 103,039 tones of C02 since March 2008, exceeding the target of 100,000 tones. City hospitals and primary care trusts have collectively saved 8,000 tones of emissions, and other changes have come from simple amendments made at home and in daily routines.

Tariq Khan, from Birmingham City Council said, ‘This achievement is great and more achievements are bound to happen, the reduction of carbon emissions will reduce again this year, leaving Birmingham cleaner and fresher as the second largest city in the UK.’

Student Accommodation group Unite have announced that they will be switching to energy efficient light bulbs in their three Birmingham properties.

Unite believe that good environmental practice makes good business in the communities they invest in. They take pride in the customer views and expectations, aim to sustain the health and wealth-fare of their employees and carrying on producing new products and services.

Unite is one of the biggest student housing companies, providing accommodation to students. In Birmingham, they currently own three properties which are available to rent.

One of the newer properties Curzon Gateway has already got energy saving light bulbs, where as, the two older properties Londonerry house and The Heights do not have these cost effective light bulbs.

Ben Mitton, who works for Unite in the West Midlands said:

It would be more cost effective for the company’s budget to install these energy saving light bulbs, and it will also be better for the environment.

Unite want to contribute towards society and play an active part in improving the environments in which they operate.

Aside from the energy efficient light bulbs, Unite show their loyalty to the environment by running a carbon management program in association with the Carbon Trust – building to conserve energy through good insulation and use of efficient heating and lighting systems.
